‘Fushi’ (Ukulhas Picnic Island)

Fushi, referred to as the Picnic Island of Ukulhas, is located just a few miles east from Ukulhas. Fushi is an uninhabited, small and beautiful Island surrounded by a rocky reef that descends directly from the shoreline. Vegetation growing in Fushi is scarce compared to other such uninhabited islands of Maldives. However, there are three distinctive trees, separate from each other with few newly growing branches on the Island. These trees give the island a unique look and also provides much needed shade and shelter for visitors.

Unlike many Inhabited Islands, Fushi has a long, rocky reef that extends from the north tip of the Island towards the ‘Gaagandu’ which is a limestone islet situated close to Ukulhas on the northern rim of Ari Atoll. Protective shoes should be worn by those who wish to take a walk on the rocky reef to explore this adventurous spot as a larger area of the surface is made up of pointed and branching corals. However, some parts of the surface are flat and those parts are easily walkable on regular shoes as well.Due to the geographical formation of the Island, wave interaction is often experienced on the fringing reef near both tips of the Island and good swimmers can greatly enjoy this overlapping of waves. In addition to this, the reef of the Fushi is a good place to snorkel, and the surrounding reef is an excellent spot for reef fishing.

Since the island is covered with fine, powdery shining, white sand walking on the island barefooted is an amazing experience since with each step you take your feet will sink into the sand. This is both fun and therapeutic since walking on sand like this generates signals in the soles of the feet which goes up to the brain creating a feeling of comfort and relaxation which in turn helps to heal stress, insomnia and depression. This powdery sand from Fushi was often used by our forefathers to clean their teeth by rubbing it against the teeth using the index finger, as in those days there were fewer toothbrushes or tubes of toothpaste available from the Island, and the sand taken from Fushi was known to be more helpful, effective and comfortable to clean the teeth in comparison to the available from other Islands.
