Ukulhas Power House

Ukulhas powerhouse, established on 16th December 1982, is the grand institution which made Ukulhas proud by being one of the first Islands to be provided with electricity in the Maldives. The historical institution was founded by the initiation of Late Abdulla Ali, Green Villa in association with owners of fishing vessels backed by the Ukulhas community.

Heroes of lightness!

The heroes which contributed at the highest for the electricity project were Mr. Ibrahim Ali (Irumatheege, Aa.Ukulhas), Mr. Mohamed Khalid (Daisymaage’, Aa. Ukulhas), Late. Hassan Ahmed Fulhu (Javaahirumaage’, Aa.Ukulhas), Late. Ibrahim Ali (Reynige’, Aa.Ukulhas), Late. Imad Khalid (Sharmeela Manzil, Aa.Ukulhas), Mr. Ali Adam (Guleynooranmaage, Aa.Ukulhas), and Late. Waleed Khalid (Noovilaage’, Aa.Ukulhas)

Establishment of the Grand Institution

The first generator was imported from Singapore by Mr. Velanbuli Alifulhu, Ma. Velanbulige, Male’ who also was known as the best friend and business partner of Late Abdulla Ali who initiated the project. Installation of the Generator along with the wiring works were carried out by Mr. Rasheed who at that time was the Island Chief of K.Hura. The electricity project was carried and completed during the period in which the head of Ukulhas post was filled by the Late Waleed Khalid. (Ref; Report Book dated on 3 Feb 1983.). The total installation cost of the generator was MVR 46500, which includes MVR 26000 for the cost of the generator, MVR 18000 for wiring amd MVR 2500 for the construction of powerhouse

24x7 Service

At first electricity was provided for only four hours, from 6 to 10 pm by a 10KW generator only. Later on, it extended for six hours. Likewise, it kept on extending up to 24 hours a day within 2 to 3 yrs from the date of operation which also made Ukulhas the 1st island other than Male' to have electricity for 24 hrs a day.

Operator

Ukulhas Power House was operated by the Ukulhas Community till it was taken over from the public by STELCO due to the increasing demand and increase in the amount of power consumption for the new developments through the community.

Current Capacity

Now the Power House is equipped with 300KW, 325KW, 360KW, and 112KW generators and operated by certified engineers and technicians with the latest equipment and modern technologies.
