Rain-water harvesting and RO-Desalination based water supply system with solar power backup.The drinking water distribution system, referred to as Rainwater harvesting and RO-Desalination based water supply system, installed in Ukulhas Island in the year 2015, can store up to 1300 tons of freshwater and can produce 200 tons of drinking water every day by desalinating seawater. The power required for this system is mainly generated by solar energy. The system has the capacity to supply desalinated water to more than200 residences every day with the appropriate quality and pressure, further the consumed amount of water by residences can be measured readable water meters which have been installed in every residence of the island.
The project cost was more than 22 million Maldivian Rufiyaa and was funded by EU and AUS AID as a free grant to theUkulhas Community. It was carried out by Static Electric Company under the inspection of the Ministry of Environment of Maldives. The project was completed within a very short duration, commencing on5th February 2014 and completed on 30th September 2014. In addition to the residences, Water supply services are also provided at the harbor for fishermen and visitors.
