Ukulhas Harbor, located on the east coast of the Island is equipped with facilities such as oil and gas dispensers, drinking water, flake ice storages, shops, restaurants, etc. Ukulhas harbor is the main interchange hub in the atoll for the arrival and departure of vessels, such as fishing vessels, passenger ferries, cargo vessels, private boats, etc. Alot of locals and tourists who transit in Ukulhas, wait for hours in Ukulhas and spend their time by exploring and experiencing the Island. While spending time on Ukulhas during the transit, many locals take strolls through the Island, meet their friends, visit restaurants, and do shopping before their next journey.
Also adjacent to the harbor is the fishermen’s park which is an ideal location to relax and enjoy. This coastal park provides playgrounds, benches, running track, shops, bicycle lanes, and a larger shady area to sit and enjoy. During the night, when the sun goes down, the harbor is flooded with dazzling and glamorous lights, making it an ideal location to ride and walkaround with family and friends. The Ferry terminal, located nearby the entrance channel of the harbor, has the capacity to provide services for more than 200 people at a time. Available services include a lounge area, waiting area and a tuck shop making the harbor convenient port for travelers and transit passengers. There are dustbins and outside trash management facilities placed all over the harbor, provided by the Island administration.
Based on municipal regulations, adopted by the Island Council or administration, the harbor facilitates specific areas for, dinghies, speed boats, large fishing vessels, cargo vessels, ferries, etc. In addition to this Signboards, Island map and awareness posters are everywhere throughout the harbor to provide information to tourists and visitors and also a supervisor always patrols the harbor to monitor the trash management and movements of vessels within the harbor. The area of Ukulhas harbor was extended by providing additional reclaimed land during the time of President Mohamed Nasheed, this change was brough to the harbor after a long period after it was first constructed during the time of President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
