Hand lining is one of the best ways to experience how Maldivians fish, handling can be done either from a fishing vessel or even while staying on the shore. This is done by deep drop jigging, live bait fishing, or fishing with cut bait by attaching bait to the hook and letting it sink to the bottom, mostly a sinker is used to aid a fast descent. A traditional method of deep jigging is to attach rocks tied with coconuts leaves to feathered lures and when these rocks reach the bottom, the lure is freed and the line is fastly pulled through the water, the lures used are extremely light and is an extremely effective method to catch the biggest game fishes roaming the area especially the job fish and tuna. This method is only used during the day time. Hand lining with bait is most commonly done during night time, and this can be a fun experience for novice anglers as well, since the bite is always on most of the times. You can catch fishes such as varieties of snappers, emperor fishes, jacks, squirrel fish, groupers, barracudas and other varieties. Night fishing also lets you enjoy the sunset while at sea, a chance to observe the starry sky from the ocean, and the wonderful sight of glowing luminous splashes created by the Bioluminescent Plankton in the waters. We recommend that you try hand lining with live bait, cut bait and even the traditional Maldivian method of jigging with hands.
