The monument represents a rudder with a tiller of a traditional fishing vessel which exhibits the close association between the Community and fishing life. Until the year 2014, the major occupation of Ukulhas was fishing and at that time 14‘Yellowfin Tuna vessels’ were operated by the Island Community. However, due to the burgeoning of Island tourism, the number of fishing vessels decreased and most of the fishermen have moved to the tourism Industry.
Ukulhas can also proudly take credit as the Island that introduced the modern style of Yellowfin tuna fishing to Maldivian fishermen, with large boxes to store ice, in built oil tanks in vessels to support long journeys and by upgrading the living quarters of the crews of the vessels. Further the fishing for Yellow fin Tuna was done by using a handline with a Basket as a reel and glove were used as a protective gear, later vessels from other islands started to implement these methods too.
‘Ukulhas Rudder Monument’, located at the Fishermen's Park, was built during the time of former head of Island Late Mohamed Khalid (Rusdhee) in the year 2002 to celebrate the occasion of the national fishermen’s day. The monument was built using carbon steel, concrete and local timbers.
